fork seals, oil

~1982 Kawa KZ440 LTD D4~

I will be replacing the right side fork seal on my bike. Are there any tricks to this procedure? Will I need to buy anything else other than the seal?

Also, do I need to use oil specifically marked as fork oil or can I use regular oil? (the correct weight of course)
Thanks alot!

You need fork oil, I use 15W for street. BTW, I believe the weight ratings are different for fork oil compared to motor oil.

Thanks alot!

Loosen upper fork clamp bolt before attempting to remove fork cap.

Before beginning work on the forks, prop front end up with a support beneath the engine to prevent possibility of front end unexpectedly collasping.

Re-fill to factory specs with exact volume of oil (see FSM). With springs in position inside the forks, usa a thin wooden dowel to fashion a dipstick whereby the correct level may be noted and marked for future reference when needing to check levels. Save the dipstick, which will come in handy later on to avoid the dreaded measuring cup ordeal.

Good Luck! :)

Use fork oil not motor oil. I use 15w BelRay in my KZ650 and it works great for me (I'm 205lbs.) Ed
