Where do you buy your tires?
11 Jun 2009 08:47
Locally or online? I am going to be putting a new rear on mine here soon. I found a local shop that has some good pricing, and I like to support my local economy, but I was just wondering what's out there.
Also, for mounting the tire, what are standard prices for installation?
Thanks!
Josh

alot of the locals will install free if you bring the wheel in off the bike. what little you save online will be spent somewhere before its all said and done.just my opinion

Hello Josh...I purchase my tires from
www.DennisKirk.com
= free shipping >$100.00 purchase. Will61310 is correct, take the wheel and the new tire in and you might get a break on mounting. In my neck of the woods, I can expect to pay $30.00 per wheel for mounting/balancing, even with the wheel off the bike.

Local place by me charges price of tire plus $40 for mounting and balance. Also you need to replace the tube. It's worth it to go to your local shop. I had the rear tire replaced on my kz650 last year and it cost $160 total.

Thanks guys! A local shop has a "buy one get one free" deal on dunlop 404s, which I hear mixed reviews about, but I think they will be just fine for me.
As for tire size, for my 78 kz650d, standard is:
100/90 - 19 front
110/90 - 18 rear
correct? I realize you can go wider, but could possibly run into issues with the chain guard rubber, etc.

The front size sounds right, but that rear sounds a bit narrow to me. I would go with a 120/90-18. I used 130/90-18's for years, but I now use 120's as there is practically no deformation related to the somewhat narrow rim. If your bike uses tubes be sure to replace them with quality tubes (Metzeler and Continental make some of the best). Ed

110 is stock for the rear size on your 650. I'm running a 130 on mine and it fits just fine after it ate the chain guard. :silly:
You can easily fit a 120 on there without any clearance issues.

Stock is 4.00-18, considered equiv is a 110/90-18. Trust me you do not want a 110/90-18 at least in a Dunlop 404. I put the 110/90 404 on the back of one of my 650s and it looked downright silly. Being a 90 aspect ratio that narrow was just not right at all. The 100/90 on the front was OK in size. The Dunlop 404 are so flimsy you can about mount them like a bicycle tire. You probably need no further tools other than a couple of butter knives.
Spend the extra money for better tires. Look for the correct size tires 4.00-18, 3.25-19. Metric "equivalent" are not that, they are wrong, but since few tires are available in correct sizes, use a 120/90-18 on the rear if you must, not a 110.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.
