Steering race removal (again) was created by jtroop
I've read several previous posts on this topic but haven't found my particular question addressed. Contrary to the drawing in the Clymer manual - both the upper and lower outer races have an inside diameter essentially equal to the steering head I.D. In other words, there's no edge or anything to "get hold of" to beat it out with a drift. Any thoughts ?

Can't speak to the 650, but the loose bearing race on my Kz900 did have an edge that I could get a punch/chisel/screw driver on and pound it out. However, the new tapered bearings I just put in did not and will be much harder to remove if they ever need to be replaced.

On my KZ650 there wasn't much edge, but there was just enough to catch with a 1/2" rod. You may need to angle the rod down through the neck rather than try to keep it parallel to the neck. Ed

There were already tapered bearings in there which is apparently what is causing my problem (no edge). The top outer race is rusted/pitted so not even close to reusable. Is it time for a dremel cutting wheel ? Something else ? Thanks, guys.

I bet this will grip it. It's a front lower race remover for a Valkyrie.

"if"you have a welder run a bead around the inside of the race(bearing surface)this will shrink it.then weld something across it from side to side and then you can hit the piece you weld in and it will come right out.while you have it out take a dremel or such and cut a couple notches in the neck cup across from each other so next time you can knock it out with a pin punch through the notches.

J, Have run into your prob a couple times, my solution while not as neat as welding is to whizzer wheel thru bearing shell at a low angle. bearing races are brittle and often break/relax before fully thru. this slot gives something to drive against, and even if you do go thru, damage to seating area is minimal. luck g
