Swingarm for 1976 Z750 B1
13 May 2009 07:57
I recently succeeded in my quest for a stock 750 twin exhaust system, and today I picked it up at the post office and was ready to install. But I immediately ran into a problem
. The bolts for the rear mounting bracket don't clear the swingarm. It's only a matter of a few millimeters, but it's definitely a no go. I'd previously wondered if my swing arm was the stock one. It is chrome and not black like stock, but I figured it was just chromed at some point. Now I'm not so sure anymore.
Could I bother anyone with the same bike to measure the width of their swingarm (widest point)? Mine is on the bike, so it's a bit hard to measure, but seems to be a little over 29cm (~11.5 inches).
The other possibility I can think of is minor differences between the EU and US models. I got the exhaust from the States and my bike is European. I think it's unlikely, but who knows.
Last possibility is that I'm a moron, and just didn't mount it correctly  :S
Here's the best picture I have of my swingarm. My camera is busted so I was unable to take any pictures while trying to install the exhaust.

Thanks for your help Rainman! Looks like you have 1/8 inch of clearance between your rear mounting bolt and the swingarm. On my bike the bolt is about 1/8 inch too long to clear the swingarm.
You're right about my swingarm looking stock. This is driving me crazy. I think we might be dealing with the last possibility I outlined in my first post

It might not be as crazy as it seems. The passanger peg mounts may be bent in from the bike going down in a previous life, both sides would be a little odd though (if it is both sides you are having the problem).
I will post some pictures I took of the peg mount width.
Keep in mind that the muffler bracket mount stud (closest to the swing arm)is below the swing arm centerline and the clearance increases as the shocks compress. The previous pictures were taken on the center stand so the shocks are at full extension.

can the brackets be pushed back out just a little for clearance you need?
this aint a really good picture but i acually pushed these rear peg/exhuast mounts out around 3/4" on either side for clearance for a differant swingarm and to modify the way the top tube mounted to lower tube, that overlapping stuff drove me nuts!
Still recovering, some days are better than others.

What do you know... I'm a complete moron.
As I was reading Rainman's comment about the clearance increasing as shocks compress, I must admit my face turned a little red. For some reason I had figured it was the other way around when I was fitting the muffler   Funny how my brain shuts down from time to time
Anyway, exhaust is now mounted. It looks fantastic. Even though the right NOS muffler that was promised to be perfect has a few rusted scratches, and the right one has a couple of dings, I'm really happy with the outcome. Only thing that bothers me now is that since the original mufflers are so much more quiet than the MACs, I can now hear all the bad noises from the motor
Thanks to everyone for helping me out, and most of all to Rainman who got my brain working again :S

Congrats on the successful install.
Don't feel too bad, it was not until I leaned on the seat to take another picture that I noticed the motion.
Picture of the rear peg mount width for reference.

come on man you run the site and don't know we need a picture?
any way i ahave asked this before about the stock B exhaust, on my 76' the right muffler has a bolt for removing the baffle and the left side does not. is this normal? or has someone replaced it with a very original looking aftermarket exhaust? which i doubt because it has the Kawasaki part number on it.
