Here'e the pic....
I've given up on figuring this one out and picked up a pair of carefully calibrated 14mm washers and stuffed them on the ends of the axles just inside the fork tubes, one on each side to keep everything centered as gane suggested.
It's got to be a mismatch between the forks and trees. God only knows what year they are from and he's not saying.

i like the schwinn emblem:laugh: the trees lool like ltd style which are more straight ie wider which would explain why they wouldn't line up
