KZ1000st swingarm removal... was created by racer54
Have a KZ1000st shaftie and trying to remove the motor. Right now, it looks like I need to get the swingarm off so I can unhook the shaft from the motor. Can't figure out how to get the damn swingarm off. I have taken the three allen bolts out on each side of the swingarm pivot and according to the manual, I just have to remove the picot bolt from each side of the arm!? Isn't happening! Anyone here done this and can tell me how to unbolt the swingarm from the frame/motor so I can get the motor out? I'm stumped!

Hi Racer54,if I remember correctly, you need to reinstall the flange with the 3 bolts (not tight)and remove the large locknut(adjuster)then use an allen wrench to freeup the pin (unscrewing it out about 1/4 inch )and then remove the 3 bolts and gently pry the large pin back until the bearing on the back of it is released .When I took out my motor the manual said that the swing arm did not have to be removed but I had to in order to get enough clearance for the motor to come out .The drive cover has to come off and I pryed back the boot .There is a small pin that holds on the shaft that can fall out after thr drive shaft is removed.Hope this helps and let me know how you do with it.

" There is a small pin that holds on the shaft that can fall out after thr drive shaft is removed. "

The spring that holds that pin in can be a pain to reinstall. It is a metal band on the inside of the drive shaft that is accessed from the end.

Well...that didn't get me anywhere.I put the 3-point cover back on and re-installed the allen bolts. Tried to loosen the "pin" but it didn't want to budge. I could get it to turn but that's all it did...turn. It didn't loosen up at all. Beings it has threads on the pin, doesn't it have to unscrew out of the frame? Don't see how it could pried out with it being threaded in there. Do you have to take out the parts inside the swingarm or do you just leave all that intact? Trying to take off the housing where the counter-shaft sprocket usually goes. Has to be a way to get this stuff off.

Hi,the end of the pin passes into a bearing center (it's like the pin has a bearing pressed on the end inside the swingarm.I think that I just kept working it back and forth as I put the allen wrench on a bit of an angle so I could pull on it as I was prying the 3 bolt cover with the 3 bolts loose. After I got it to release abit then I removed the flange and worked it the rest of the way out .Sorry I can't be more of a help but my bike is at my brothers garage and it was about 6 months ago I took it apart.

Thanks for the help. I can't get that pin to move on either side. Not sure what to do now. Don't have a torch to cut the frame off the motor so will have to keeping checking.

Hi,here is a pic of the setup. If you unscrew the flange with the 3 bolts ,there is nothing holding it in except the bearing (the end of #5 is stuck in #9 in pic)inside the swingarm that is stuck on.If you can grab onto it you should be able to tap or pull it out.I unscrewed mune out while pulling on it although it is not threaded on the inside ,twisting just helped get it out.

I can see what you mean from the diagram. One side turns a little but the left side seems stuck. I will have to keep working on it I guess. Doesn't look like anything is holding it in there. Mine must be stuck. This bike is just a parts bike and has been sitting a couple years and who knows what it went threw before I bought it. Wish I had a torch to heat it up in that area but I don't, so will have to come up with something else. It went in so it has to come out, I just have to figure out how!

hey is the frame gonna be salvaged or is it a throwaway piece because if it is then use a cut of wheel on a grinder and cut it out with that it will come then.

Don't want to hurt the frame so you can buy it off me for $150. It's a rare one. LOL Good idea about the grinder. I have a small one. I did get the right side to pop out so need to work more of the left side. Found out on another sight what to look for to get driveshaft out. I think I have it figured out but that grinder is sitting there ready...unless you want to buy it!?

Got the mother oput of the frame late last night. Ended up spacing the 3-bolt bracket out and wedging a long crowbar behind it and then smacking the other end with a big hammer. Right side only took a couple big hits but the left side made me work for it. Took 20 minutes or so of persuasion from the big hammer to get it to pop out of there but eventually yours truly beat the machine. Found the pin that held the driveshaft onto the shaft coming out of the gearcase(VERY small pin...I thought it was just a hole by itself but there is a pin in there...so small you can't se it and I would never guess it did what it did)and the driveshaft pulled right out. Leaned the motor and frame on it's side and lifted the frame off the motor. Now that I did that, I hope I don't ever do that again. What a pain in the ass. But, it's done so that the good part. Anyone need any parts off a KZ1000st? Will put some of the parts on E-Bay in a couple days. Not a complete bike when I got it but there might be a part or two I might have you may need. I can make very good deals. What doesn't sell or I don't use will be pitched.

Hi,glad to hear you got it out.I am looking for 2 but prefer 4 good signals and 2 good headlight ears and a good left and right handlebar controls(switches).I got my originals but all the parts are rough shape and I don't think I could do a really good job with repainting them .
