KZ1300 rear wheel
29 Mar 2009 15:10
Has anyone tried to put a stock KZ1300 rear wheel on a GS1100 swing arm? It's going on a 78 Z1R. The KZ 1300 wheel is wider than the stock Z1R rear wheel I have now, and matches the front in style. I know it's a 17", I can live with that, the goal is to mount a wider rear tire.

IIRC the 1300 was a shaft drive, it would be quite a bit of work to adapt a sprocket much less getting it in a GS arm, but i could be wrong

I suppose that will depend on whether or not the drive paddles from the chain drive will fit into the cushions in the shaft drive 1300 wheel. My memory says they are two different creatures.
I've got an extra wheel but I don't have and extra chain drive hub if that's what it's called.

The answer is NO. I have both and they will not interchange. the hub is too different, and will not take a sprocket hub. Go with a LTD 16" wheel it is also wider and will drop right in. Here is mine in a GS swing arm in a GPz1100. And "Progressive suspensions" Honda Lead Wing shocks, #12-1205B. They are 14" long and will offset the longer swing arm which has the mounting points farther back. This makes the bike sit right and retain your good handling. If you use stock length 12" shocks the rear end will drop too much and she will handle like a Pig.
PS. I also forgot to mention You will pay a pretty peny for a "17 tire, that size is usually only used on large touring bikes. The 16" however is very common and are very cheap.

I also did forget to mention. One thing you WILL require from the 1300, is the axle. It is the perfect length for that swing arm width. That is what I am using.

how about some pics of that z1r?there are a few of us on here but most don't come out much.i built my own swingarm and put a 17" r1 wheel with a 200 mm rear tire.
here is a fuzzy pic, there are clearer ones in "my 1980 z1r and 900 projects" in the projects.

hey thanks for the pics.that looks like one of those sought after x-pipes ya got there,do you know the brand of it?
your z1r looks pretty complete, who built the handle bars?
triangle when i got my 1978 z1r my dad had already put a 19" front and a 16" rear on the bike to get the axles at different heights to help combat the high speed wobble.it must have worked because i never had any speed wobble problems.burnt up 7 topends because of low gearing tho,i was a slow study.
glad it will be kept in the family, keep us posted now that you got the picture/vista thing figured out.
