Brake line length?
14 Mar 2009 10:26 - 14 Mar 2009 10:27
The parts diagram for my 1981 KZ1100A1 shows the front brake lines as 580mm or 22.83 inches. I thought they looked a little long so when I installed SS lines, I made them 22" rather than 23". Now I'm wondering if I made a mistake. The lines seem long enough when the front wheel is off the ground, but are the forks at the bottom of their travel when the wheel is off the ground in a stationary position, or should I go to 23" lines? Here's what they look like now:

If front wheel will turn lock to lock with front wheel off the ground, and still allow some slight brakeline slack at each full lock position, am thinking existing line lengths are okay.
From the fitment shown in the pic, there's probably no difference in line slack from lock to lock, but would check to be sure.
Would concur that the front wheel doesn't drop any lower during riding than its position suspended off the ground.
Good Luck!

Patton,
Thanks. There's a splitter mounted to the front of the lower triple clamp that the lines to the front calipers come out of so there's no change in slack as the wheel is turned from side to side.

If it was me I'd make them at least 2-3" longer. If the front suspension extends after going over a bump the lines you have now will be stressed and possibly break at the fittings.

They do look a little short but if they don't "max out" when the wheel is up you should be ok. Maybe pull on the wheel when it's up just to make sure.
