noisy tach was created by rkan
This morning I started my bike to go to school. It was really cold but I did warm it up to proper running temp. While I was riding though, I heard this noise that got louder as the engine speed increased. I figured out that the noise was coming from either the tach itself or the tach cable. Later when the weather got warmer, the noise disapeared. Is there something I can do to make sure it doesn't do that any more? Maybe just lube it? Thanks for any help!

take off your cable and spary some solvent down it to clean out the crud let it dry for a while then spray cable lube down it and workit around a bit and it should clear up the noise.

Where the cable is frayed or otherwise damaged or just plain worn out, a new tach cable is a relatively inexpensive "maintenance" item.

Brand new tach cable

Good Luck! :)

Sounds like "old" grease that needed to warm up. Remove cable and clean well, then coat liberally with either white lithium or black moly grease. Almost any good wheel bearing grease will work also... :)

In case the cable is not the problem and it is actually the tach itself, you can remove the tach and put a little oil on the part that rotates with your cable. It can get dry and noisy too.
