Brake Lines?

Brake Lines? was created by Wallybanger
I've got a 1980 KZ750H1 LTD. Anyone familiar with this thing knows that there is a break line going from the master cylinder to a splitter right under the headlight and then 2 brake lines going down to the calipers.

I want to make new breaklines for this beast but it's getting cost prohibitive for 3 SS lines. I'm wondering if I can get away with 2.

Run one from the master to the right caliper and then use the double banjo bolt from the splitter to run another line from the RHS Caliper over to the LHS caliper.

I haven't had a look inside that splitter yet but i doubt there are any safety mechanisms in there and PV/T seems to be telling me that doing this won't change anything.

Anyway, at $20 an end an $11/foot for SS line, 2 lines is definitely better than 3. Just thought I would post here to see if anyone might want to dissuade me for one reason or another...

The spiltter should have the switch to turn the brake lamp on when you pull the lever. You can get Russell lines at Denniskirk.com that you put together. You can buy what you can and do one part at a time. But you should do both lower lines going to the calipers at the same time.

I think your bike is different than the bikes (like mine) that had this setup. I believe your brake lamp switch is integrated into the master cylinder. You should check. Ed

Yeah, my break switch is in the master and I'm actually replacing it with a banjo bolt switch.

My question still hasn't really been answered....

the answer, no you dont want to do that, one caliper will brake harder than the other.the splitter divides the fluid first, then sends it on the way, keeping the presure even to both calipers

I think the double banjo bolt is in itself a splitter and cannot see how one side should be more pressure than the other. Please explain. I'm no fluid dynamics expert so I can't say for sure but it seems to me if the hoses are the same length and coming off the same piston? One banjo might be 1/4 to 1/2 an inch longer from the piston because of the bolt but will this make a real difference in a closed circuit? Interesting.

The answer, yes that will work just fine. Both Triumph and Suzuki do two line systems that way on thier sport bikes. I beleave the thinking is that the less flexable brake line used in a system the better the feel. I've done the one line down and then a jumper to the other caliper, brake lines for years.

Good Luck!

If u have a switch at the lever then u dont need the stock splitter/ braek lt switch at all.
u can run 1 line each, from the master to each side.
or u can run 1 from the master to the right cal and then a second from the right cal to the left cal.
I have a stock length, 3 line set up in braided steel if u are interested.

Thanks guys. I was pretty sure it would work fine and I knew it had been done on other bikes. Just thought I would ask here first just to be sure.

Mark, I hadn't thought about doing 2 lines from the master but that is actually a fine idea. I'm wondering which one will be harder to bleed

How many millions to do you want for your stock steel lines? I think it may be a tough sell at this point ;)
(Oh, I was lookin at your bike in your profile pic... it looks SWEET!)

Thanks.
I am ordering the 2 line from the master setup for mine. i played with some lines and it seems that it will be nice to route the lines this way. i didn’t like the 1 line going from cal to cal due to the fact that there is nothing to hold the line in place. just my opinion.
PM me for a $. I haven’t figured that out yet. could u see then in my project post?
