KZ1000 fork question
25 Feb 2009 05:02
Are there any differences in forks between models and years 1978 to 1980?
Mine's an '80 B4, and I'm looking for some good forks to rebuild to put on my bike.
Figured while I'm at it, I'd go ahead and put some new neck bearings in (low speed wobble/detent). Will I need any special pullers or anything?

It looks to me like the KZ1000B was all the same from 1977-80. Get a seal puller if you're replacing seals. Makes the job much easier. Otherwise just a hammer and a drift punch will knock out the old bearings. Of course the old broom handle holder tool to remove the bottom allen bolts from the fork legs or impact driver will be needed to disassemble the legs.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Thanks Ron. Happen to know if there's a difference between A and B? I'm lookin at a set, but they don't specify what model KZ1000. Just that they're from a '78.
Yeah, I was just looking at some other threads on this subject, and the broom handle sounds easy enough. If not, my welder is on standby.
I'd rebuild my own, but mine have some rust.

It looks like 1978A was the same too. 1977A would be different and the 1979-80A had the black legs.

Google "forks by frank" (i think that's right)
Might be a better option of having new tubes. I have a 1980 front end and it has a few blemmishes on the legs. I'll probably end up using them on the drag bike as it has no suspension. Roy

Thanks Roy, but I just bought a used set of forks on fleabay. Should be here Saturday. Hopefully they're nice and straight and as pretty as described. Now I'm going to order some seals and dust covers and some new neck bearings.
The only reason I'm replacing my forks is because mine have some of that unsightly rust on them. I plan on rebuilding and polishing the new forks so they're ready to swap in. Trying to avoid a whole lot of down time.
I did see a set of KZ forks for sale with Franks tubes on them, but they were extended.

The 79/80 KZ1000E1/E2 used 41mm fork tubes and was unique in that. The other models used a different size I believe.

Well I got these forks a month ago, and haven't had time to mess with them. I have everything I need now except one thing.
I want to make that tool that holds the thing still while I turn the bottom allen bolt out. Someone said he welded a nut onto a piece of all-thread?
What size nut?
I've decided not to use the lowers that came with these forks, because mine are in better shape. Tubes are great though.
I also noticed that on one of my original 1980 forks, there's an extra casting with a small threaded hole in it. Maybe 3mm.
The lower from the 1979 I just bought doesn't have this casting. If I remember correctly, the casting is on the speedo drive side. L/h
Anybody know what this casting is for?

the nut size that you can use is 17mm and the little hole your talking about is for the speedo cable guide.
