I have used most of the sport compounds from the "Roadrunner" on up. In some situations I also mix and match for the riding stile. There is not a bad tire in the bunch. Just go to their web sight and it will inform you what to match to what. Do not pick a tire that is too soft, it is not required. My three favorite are; AM-20 "Roadrunner", AM-26 "Roadrider", and AM-18 "Venom". These three you can pretty much Mix & Match with out problems or worries. If you shop around you can get these pretty cheaply. I use these on everything from my stock 76 KZ900 to my 82+? GPz1150++++ to my 81 KZ1300(1400+++) to my 78 Z1-R1200+++ I get about 12 - 17k mi out of them depending on how I ride. I don't think I paid more than $120 per tire, and that was for the KZ1300 tire usually I pay less than $100 for the other bikes. Around $80-$90 I think, for the other bikes.

I don't have any miles on my cheng shin barracudas yet, but this spring I plan on giving them a good shake down. They must be better than the rock hard garbage (i won't mention a brand, because the tires pulled off were probably so hard from age) i pulled off the rims. For me I really wanted a soft forgiving compound as the 650 will be my first big road bike. I probably should have spent more money and picked up some michelins....

Cheap tires are great right up ubtil they break loose....

Feel is everything. A good tire will let you know it is breaking loose, a not so good tire will hold well, then suddenly let go.

No matter if you are not really pushing the adhesion, but on a track or just really moving through the turns on the street....very important.
