Cafe Racer or Street Fighter Style From my 83 1100
13 Dec 2008 20:40
I love my bike, but I am the type to modify. I want to make my bike into something like a cafe racer, or street fighter. I would like rear sets on the beast...but the question is...where do i find cafe racer parts for my bike...

There are a lot of suppliers for generic and specific parts. Worst case you just go buy something close and make it fit.
For a cafe style you will need the following:
Clubman handlebars
Aftermarket Headlight and mounts
Cut down the seat and recover
New mirrors
At least thats all I can see on the 3500.00 1977 Cafe Racers I see for sale on Craigslist.
I would look through the owners galleries and the projects sections of the forum and figure out where you want to go with your bike.
As an example, I've been working on a bike for almost a year and I still don't know for sure what I am doing on everything. I just started out with the following goals and have tried to make it work and look good:
1) Large capacity tank (used a Yamaha XS1100 tank cause it came with the bike).
2) Lower bars (European style as they are as low as I can go without hitting the tank.
3) Rear sets (Did the homebrew style as they worked and look mostly stock).
4) Single seat and short frame/fender.
And it has been a long road to get all of this done. Take a look around and figure what your goal is and go for it. As for finding the parts, if you see something you like it doesn't hurt to ask where they got it.

I know what your saying about the modifying compulsion. If I could make a suggestion, first ; are you wanting considerable performance improvement I'd say go the "streetfighter" direction
On the other hand I'm partial to the old looking cafe bikes too. I once had an H2 with clubmans, had all kinds of fun on that bike.
So a little performance over where your bike is now? Or lots more performance(oh and more modifying too:blink: )

What is your bike, exactly? Got some photos for us? To make your decision on "what" direction to go, what are your expectations of the bike?...what do you want it to do?

I have a 82 KZ1100 Spectre shafty at the moment it has a Road Warrior look to it all black.
I am thinking of doing something different to it later but here how it looks now.

CHeck out one of the other forums I belong to for ideas about cafe and/or fighter conversions for your beast.
www.dotheton.com
You'll find a LOT of ideas on how to build the bike along either of those lines (or a combination of both perhaps).
Can't wait to see what direction you go with it!!

I think your bike will lend itself to the cafe mode more so than the 'Fighter. Fighters tend to have 17s and suspension that makes them work (well...normally) and the shaft on your bike is going to represent a substantial hurdle there. But, I do think that dragracers have a trick to convert shafties to chain...but I'm not that guy, you'd have to check with one of those guys.
