Wheel options for '76 kz900
04 Dec 2008 12:25
I am looking to change the big and little wheel combo on my 1976 KZ900ltd with a 16" rear and a 19" front. I had planned on an 18" rear to match the factory mags, but I am now thinking a 16" front would suit me better regardless of matching.
What is available to use? Is anything a bolt in?

Also, I have always been a fan of wire spokes, even if it were just the front as well.

I wouldn't go for a 16" front. You might lose too much stability due to the lack of gyroscopic effect. I can only think of a handful of streetbikes with a 16" front rim. If it was me, I'd go with a 17" rim. You'll gain some quicker handling without being too twitchy and you'll have a better selection of tires than available with a 16" front.
If you really want to stick with a 16" try a VFR700, VF750, Gs1150, Gsx1100F (120/80-16), ZX600A/B/C (110/90-16) or Gpz900 (120/80-16). These rims were used on bikes with narrow front ends and should fit without too much work. The CBR900RR also had a 16" but they were 130/70-16 and the rim will most likely not fit in between the fork legs.

In that case, an 18" rear mag would be the way to go to even up the front and rear to give me the look I am going for. Is the rear from a police kz a bolt on piece? Or are there other options?

16 x 4 harley rim. 150 tire. Bucahhnon stainless spokes.
It has a 3/8 offset sprocket
Wire up a 16 x 3 harley ring to the front hub. Have Bucahhnon custom make the spokes and run a 130 tire on front. Widen the front fender. That would look good.
Like a fat boy hd , you could have the "fat kaw"

If you use a 16 inch up front make sure you have plenty of spare parts laying around for when you low side it.
