Year to Year parts compatibility with 80 750G LTD

I tried some searches - but evidently am using the wrong terms...

I have a 1980 750G (twin), LTD. I am wondering what other models/years of KZs would have compatible parts. Some specifics I am interested in at this point are:

Seat - I would prefer the flater style on the standards - would one from a 76 to 79 750 twin fit? I thought I saw mention of that when I first started lurking here - but could not find the post again (probably looking right at it and not seeing it!)

Wheels? Exhaust? Brake parts?

Motor bits - on the surface the engines from prior and later model 750 twins appear quite similar - are most engine parts interchangeable?

Thanks in advance.

76-80 seats interchange

76-80 front wheels interchange.

76-79 rear wheels are disk brake, 80 rear is drum brake, you can use a 76-79 swingarm on a 80 to use the 76-79 rear disk brake wheel, just have to swap brake pedals and mount master cylinder.

76-80 motors are identical, 82-83 (84 in Canada) are the same except for the valve cover, head (emission ports), electronic ignition, and BS34 carbs vs the BS38's of the 76-80.

76-79 carb rebuild kits won't work on the 80 (I've never got them to work right anyway).

All the exhaust systems will interchange, may have to make mounts though.

Here's what I have on my 79 750 twin:

NOS Morris Mags
82 motor with electronic ignition
79 carbs
80 750G tail, side covers, and tank
80 exhaust
80 Forks
83 GPz750 front calipers
79 KZ1000 front brake rotors
96 GPz1100 front master cylinder
76-79 seat, had the 80 on there but didn't like it.

I had 80 mag wheels with 80 swingarm on there for awhile.

All the above is pretty much a bolt on, lots of stuff interchanges :)

Hello Mike and WELCOME to KZr forum! :cheer:

If not already familar, kawasaki.com includes parts diagrams for many Kawasakis, including information about which parts are shared among various models. For instance, could find which brake parts are also used on which specific other models and years.

Go to kawasaki.com
Click "continue" to right of motorcycle
Scroll to 1980
Ignore the other columns
Click "1980"
Click "continue"
Scroll down to your bike
Click "750 twin LTD" (or whatever)
Click "Parts Diagram"
Click on area of interest
Exploded view diagram appears at top of screen
Part numbers are detailed below
Click the part number
Click the yellow question mark
A list appears with all Kawasaki models using that particular part

Let us know if you have any difficulty navigating the kawasaki.com site and finding parts compatibility.

Good Luck! :)

The kawasaki parts diagrams will tell you what other models used identical parts, but it won't tell you what parts will fit your bike.

As an example, 76-80 KZ750 twin gas tanks will interchange, but every year model has a different part number for the tank.

And it's often wrong :(

Thanks guys! That was exactly the kind of info I was looking for. It will be a while before I am doing much wrenching on this bike - so I am in learning and parts locating mode for now.

OK - next question chassis related - frame geometry - is the LTD frame same as non LTD's? I am assuming not - I would guess maybe a degree or two more rake in the steering stem to enhance that "custom" look? If so, chances are I will want to sharpen up the steering a bit - maybe some shocks a tad longer than stock? Any other low cost suggestions handling wise?

Ride the bike for awhile before you start making changes, you might find it works really well the way it is.

As far as I can tell, the 76-80 all have the same amount of rake. I let my Nephew ride my 79 750B, he was impressed with how it handled and rode better than his KZ650SR and GPz750 Turbo. He has a 90 mile round trip commute to work, and he often leaves the Turbo here for me and takes my 750 twin.

I'm going to be in so much trouble when I finally get busted on that Turbo :woohoo:

Steell - definetly - I will ride before I start tweeking to much - but just trying to get some ideas in advance. It looks like I may have plenty of time to just sit and ponder the work on the KZ though as I just found out I am headed for some back surgery (ruptured disc) . That is going to keep me from wrenching right when I had hoped to be elbow deep into this project. Oh well.

I always loved those 750 turbos. I can vividly recall the motomag write ups on it back in the day! The GPz turbo is yet another on the long list of bikes I would love to own!
