Raking questions....... was created by iroc355
hey guys, just a few ?'s bout raking a kz900 frame. first off, is it better to start with a new steering head or to re-use the original and why?

if a new steering head is needed where is the best place to get on from?

also what methods have you found to work best?

thanks!

Usually, the two ways it's done is to cut the top backbone frame tube and cut out about an inch...depends on how much rake you want...then after heating neck area, pull steering head back to meet cut and reweld the tubes together. Best to put a plug inside the tubes to line them up. You just have to be sure you pull straight back for obvious reasons. Other way is to cut original head tube at the angle you want and then weld another tube to the original tube. It will extend the front-end farther forward slightly but give you more room at the front of the tank. The first way will have the head tube hitting the tank and you will have to modify the tank or move mounting points rearward a little.

i prefer the looks of the 1st way if its done right, just gusset the backbones/steering head area when your done.on mine i think im going to have frame put in jig and have steering head completely removed since its not straight and have a new head welded back on like origional but with a couple degrees of rake added B)

Still recovering, some days are better than others.
