Swappable Side Covers ???
11 Nov 2008 07:46
I have a 1976 KZ900-A4. "HAD" two nice OEM side covers with badges.
Unfortunately lost one on the highway and would like to find out if 1977-1978 KZ1000's are an exact OEM match or do I need to stick with 1976 KZ900.
Really want to stay OEM if possible and appreciate any insight you can give.
Thankks

76-78kz and 79-80 ltd should physically fit the same, emblems should also fit same holes.drill a 1/8" hole in top front corner of the covers before you paint them and use a little piece of that little chain they use on finger nail clippers to wrap around frame tube as a safety chain to hold cover if it pops out of rubber grommets, you might also want to replace the grommets
Still recovering, some days are better than others.

to hold them on i drill a 3/32 hole about 5/16 of an inch dow from the end of the locating pins and push them in place then i use ether cotter pins or spring pins push thru the holes to keep them in place in the rubber grommets.

Pretty much like Plummen said, the sidecovers with the same OEM numbers (except for color) are KZ900A4, KZ900A5, KZ900B, KZ1000A1/2/A2A, and KZ1000B1/2. Strangely, the B3/4 have different numbers but I also think they will fit.

Thanks. Yeah I replaced the gromets as well, but we had a fall run that included some highway action and I tweaked the throttle a bit and well, I guess new didn't stand a chance either.
Will be sure to secure new ones once back on bike.

The earlier thread shown below contains another neat solution offered by none other than the world famous locozuna who never met a sidecover he didn't like.
