??? for who has done a gs swingarm swap
01 Nov 2008 02:46
Ok I found a ton of 16 inch 40 spoke wheels on ebay. How wide of a wheel will work in the gs arm? The one I'm looking hard at is 4 inches wide. I'm thinking that will be too wide. Maybe a 3.5 or something close to that? I'm going to powdercoat both rims black and get new spokes for both wheels. I found a bunch of rusty rims but they are off of Hardley's. Maybe I won't mention that to anyone else.

Cool now I have the tire size I just need to know how wide of a rim I should have. Maybe a 3.5 or 4 inch?

With some minimal work you can get a 5.5x17" rim in there with a 180mm tire into a Gs1100E arm.
Check out how to do it here . Scroll down to where it says "180mm Tire Upgrade."
So a 4" wide rim should be no biggie.

Don, I did this mod on my '77 kz1000 10 years ago.(when 18" tires were still current) "81 GS1100E swingarm, SUN wm 3.5,18". aluminum hoop, swedged stainless steel spokes & nipples. all that was required was a call to Buchanan's frame shop in Ca. stating hub origin and lace pattern. and in @ a week, I recieved a rim & spokes.which were and are exact fit. If I were to do it again, I'd opt for 17" simply for access to a wider range of rubber compunds/.availibility. w/wheel centered, I have @ 5mm clearance between chain (530) and a 150 tire.(brake stay arm required tweeking) w 3.5 rim, tire profile is optimum at 150, wider tires less so. hope this helps G

Woops I said 16 inch and meant 18. It will be a little harder to find the 18 but I have all winter. I'll go with the 18x3.5 to make it easy on myself and to be able to get other stuff done. I'm also wondering if I should powdercoat the hubs black when I have the wheels done or just polish them up a little bit. Now off to ebay!
