Will an 18T Front Sprocket Actually Fit?
24 Oct 2008 22:24 - 24 Oct 2008 22:26
Still contemplating new sprockets for my 750 twin. I now run 16(front)/32(rear). The 16T front is the stock steel sprocket but the 32T rear is a custom aftermarket aluminum sprocket that is pretty pricey and I don't remember where I got it. The stock sprocket is a 38T steel available for about $24 from Z1. If I run an 18T front with it, that will be close to the same ratio (close enough). Z1 doesn't list the 18T version but the JT website does. Z1 does list the 17T front sprocket.
Does an 18T with 530 chain fit onto a 750 twin and clear the front shield or does it drag? Would the 18T cause any chain clearance problems coming out of the engine case?
Just wondering if anybody else used an 18T front.

Z1 lists the 18 tooth sprocket for the 750 twin, it's not with the rest of the front sprockets though, it's listed after the rear sprockets.

I have a 17 tooth front sprocket on mine, and I don't believe an 18 will work without removing the shield. It was so close with my 17 tooth that I went ahead and removed it.

I've kept the shield w/my 17t sprocket. Like steell says, it's a close fit. I'm sure you would have to remove it w/an 18T.

If your bike still has a centerstand the chain may drag on it with the 18 tooth sprocket requiring a fabbed up stop.

Thanks for the news, I guess I will have to bite the bullet and get one of the custom rear sprockets again to keep the drive ratio around 2.1 like it is now.
One question: if you remove th shield, does the flying chain lube make a horrific mess in there?

I don't use regular motorcycle chain lube, I use an industrial penetrating wire rope and gear lube in a spray can. That stuff will not fly off from whatever it's sprayed on, so no mess anywhere. Chain was used when I installed it, and I've never had to adjust it in the six months I rode it, so it must be good stuff
