What do you guys use to hone the trianglar squared off cornered master cylinder before installing a rebuild kit ? I dont know of any hone that small so I was thinking of some sandpaper on a stick or something like that

I used a 5/16 bolt with the head sawed off and took a hack saw and cut a split in one end the and slid a piece of emory cloth into it and stuck it into the end of a cordless drill. Worked well for me

I use a master cylinder hone (they come in just about every size you could conceive) - but before I got that, I used a piece of scotchbrite pad gently threading in and out to get a light crosshatch.

crosshatch?
Then I have the wrong part:huh:
The bloody thing in front of me has THE MOST delicate lip imaginable.I'd have thought the bore should need to be mirror smooth to achieve a seal?

You want a light honed look, not shiny. Do not use mineral spirits, use brake fluid to hone and alcohol to clean it out. Then coat the rubber seals with brake fluid and reassymble. The scoth brite sounds good to me, even have some in stock, thanks guys

Thanks for that, this has surprised me as I'd assumed a mirror finish is required.
I have to ask though, wouldn't the "hilltops" of the hone "drag" and eventually tear the lip? Intuitively, it would seem to be the case.
Wish I'd studied hydraulics now:)
Also, wouldn't the channels created by honing provide a path for fluid to leak past the lip?
Just a thought, interested to hear opinions.

The small grooves cut when honing allow a VERY thin trace of fluid to help lubricate the seals.

It's the same with engine piston rings - the bore is not smooth
