Removing front brake switch
28 Sep 2008 17:36
Hi all,
I have a 81 kz1100a1 and the front master brake is leaking.
How do you remove the electrical switch? I figured since I'm rebuilding the cylinder, I might as well paint it.

Isn't it just a small screw that hold the micro-switch in place?

There was a small clip that holds the outside of the rubber cover, but I did not see the screw.
Where is that located?

Is there not a very small screw on the switch?
I'm not familiar with that set-up,but most of those switches ARE just held in place with a screw...look close.

Sorry I don't see the screw.
It actually looks like it's pressed in and the lever keeps it in place. The clip holds the rubber boot.
According to the book I'm supposed to "push up on the front brake light switch locking tab and pull the switch free from the lever bracket"

If you remove the brake lever there is a plastic piece you rotate and the piston should be able to be removed. I suspect the seals are worn and pressure can't be maintained.
www.z1enterprises.co should have front master cylinder rebuild kits or know where to get them.

Thx Mfolks.
I have the piston out already.
My problem is getting the switch that activates when you pull on the lever out.

I think I know what's going on. On mine the brake switch is "pressed" in using 2 plastic tines on the switch that engages 2 square holes on the housing. You might need to clean it up a bit, to find it, but just use a small screwdriver or something similar to push the tine out of the hole and the switch should just pull out. You may have to push both tines, but I've never had to do that.

Thanks Ron,
It sounds like it's similar to the setup for the master cylinder plunger.
I'll have a look at it tonight.

Hey Ron,
just wanted to say thanks. That was it.
The microswitch has a tab that you push in and it pulls out.
Thanks again.
