They may appear the same, or actually be identical,
but I'm sure you know that all it takes is one individual part of the assembly to be changed (the dust boot or brake rod for instance), and the assembly part number also changes.

That being said, the part# for the '78 KZ650C2 rear m/s is 43015-1005.
And going by the cross-reference software, it only fits the following models:
'78 KZ650C2
'79 KZ650C3
'78 KZ650 D1/D1A (SR)
'79 KZ650 D2 (SR)

It would also help to know which '78 KZ1000 you have...
A2 = part# 43015-1016
A2A = part# 43015-1047
B2 (LTD) = part# 43015-033
C1/C1A (Police) = part# 43015-033
D1 (Z1R) = part# 43015-1013.

All numbers listed are what I currently have, and may have been superceded since this cross-reference software was created.

That doesn't mean that one, or all can't be made to fit though. ;)

that was about 115-120 in that picture 1995 water was a little rough that day.my dads got some pictures of me in 1977 on my 12th birthday driving our first dragboat going up the river hauling ass with him beside me cheering me on.that one had an LS-6 454 with a tunnel ram and lots of goodies it was a big barge compared to the flatbottems but was still good for 85-90mph.ive got some pictures of the white hondo flatbottem in the vintage car post at about 130-135 at 45 degree angle getting real loose somewhere around here thats when you know youre getting serious!:whistle: theres a vintage car post in the chit-chat section around 3rd page im thinking.:side:

By the housing, are you refering to the main body of the master cylinder (reservoir) that holds the fluid?
If so, Kawi doesn't offer the housings seperately, so it's hard to say if they're the same or not.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.
