well i just got my 77 kz1000 previously had a 80 kz650ltd. i determined my fuel mileage after two fills and it comes up at 78mpg. my odometer has to be inaccurate considering that my first two weeks riding this bike have been all throttle. any ideas? not sure how to correct this.

Might want to get a new speedo cable.

Your getting twice the milage and we hate you! What is your secret? Got some of those "100 mpg carbs?" Seriously, something is wrong with your spedo or your doing the math wrong. Is the spedo fairly accurate and is there a place that you can check the odometer? A known distance? Let us know.... :)

Im confident that i am doing the math right. The speedo bounces at any speed past 50mph. I will try this week by clocking the distance in my car then i will recheck with my bike. i think high speeds are the culprit. I did ride next to my wife last (she was in her camry) and at about 50mph in her car i was tracking 55 or so. wondering if a cable would fix or if i need a speedo. thanks

Disconnect the speedo cable remove the inner flex cable and look for burrs or broken wires.Clean and apply a light grease and re-install the flex cable and speedo cable and try again. If this does not work maybe a new speedo cable is due(they will wear out in time).

Is the attachment point at the front wheel in good shape? It's a 90 degree gearbox that might need service.

I checked my 77 this weekend and was surprised to be getting around 45. I also think my speedo is off but not by that much.

Check it on a highway mile marker or better yet go 10 miles and you will have the percentage its off.
