stretching a 79 kz1000st? was created by 79_kevin_kz
hi, new guy here. wondering if its possible to stretch my 79 kz1000? would i have to convert to chain drive instead of shaft before i could stretch it? someone offered to sell me a +8" rigid swing arm with proper fender and 60" wheelie bars but i dont know if it will fit my application. is it possible to go with a shorter stretch and still maintain the factory shaft drive?

Welcome! You will either have to have the stock drive shaft lenghtened along with having the stock arm lengthened OR convert over to chain drive. The pivots for the swingarm is also different between the shaft and chain drive bikes so you'll have to do some fab work to get a chain drive style swingarm to fit. If I was going to do all that work to lengthen a bike I would buy/ trade for a chain driven bike.

I lean towards Doug's suggestion...it is possible to do but you'll need a very large bag of money...For example, the former owners of Klasmo bikes ( www.z-klasmo.de ) prepped a very trick Z1300, including lengthening the drive shaft, so it is possible to do.
