630 Chain Conversion was created by gaillarry
My 84 GPz750 has a 630 chain with 15 front/38 rear sprockets and its time to change them. Since the 630 chain cost a fortune I'm looking at a 530 conversion. Whats the choices do I have to changeover and have similar gearing?

Here's a good resource for information on what you want to do:

www.z1enterprises.com/reference/chain630to530.aspx

They are also a great resource for buying the parts to do it. ;)

Since the 630 chain cost a fortune

Due to torque specifications and tesnile strength requirements of the 530 chains, how is the 630 a more expensive chain?

Pricing of the Ek-Chain ZZZ series and the DID chains of the same strength I found there's not that much difference.
In most cases I found the 530 to actually be more expensive.
Granted more colors to choose from but other than that, what am I missing here...

Just be aware that you are going to need an offset sprocket for the GPz750, as that's what's on it stock.

Good luck finding one, I found two that were left over from a group buy and bought both of them.

I believe 18/45 in 530 size gives you stock gear ratio, that's what we have on the GPz750 motored 79 KZ650 SR right now. You need at least a 17 tooth front sprocket to keep from eating the swingarm with the chain.

For the 530 conversion on the GPz750 Turbo, after we found out that a 56 tooth rear sprocket was going to cost us $120 we decided to stick with the 630.

And before anyone asks, the Turbo has different primary and transmission ratios than the non Turbo GPz, it runs a 3.07 final drive ratio to make up for it.

After reading all the above I'll stick with the stock chain, makes it much easier.

That's what we figured on the 750 Turbo :D
