Hey guys,

I bought this cover off of ebay. It is mint condition, but it has 3 holes in the front of the cover. I own a 78 KZ 650 B ans I do not see how this will work on the bike. Does anyone know why there are 3 holes in it? Or what bike it is for?

I am reluctent to put it on the bike if it is not the right cover.

Thanks

That's to bolt the stator coil on in the 77 KZ650 side cover, 76-77 750 twins have the same three holes. I don't think the 78 uses the stator and coil charging system, I think it uses the permanent magnet alternator which doesn't have those three holes. Look at your 78 and you can see if it has those three holes there.

I know the 750 twin changed starting in 78, but I'm not 100% certain about the 650.

I believe those are holes for allen screws to attach the "field coil" (#22), my 650 has the allens on the inside for attaching the "stator" (#27) There both kinda the same thing. You may have my style electrics. Does your cover have the same 3 holes?

That is exactly what the holes are for. In 77 Kaw used the field coil setup and this is the only year they used this setup. That cover will not fit your 78 bike, in addition to what you already noticed the locating dowels are spaced differently. On a 77 they are both on the bottom 2 holes and on later models they are spaced one on the bottom and one on the top. I just learned this from another member here this morning after he made mention of it.

No it does not have 3 holes, someone replaced the original cover with one the has lowercase lettering. That is why I bought the one in the shot above. I read the add and it said it would fit a KZ650 B, but I guess I waqs taken for a fool.

All that I saw was brand new OEM off a trailer that was mint and just a little dusty.

If anyone wants it they can let me know on this thread and i am sure that we can figure something out.

Well the seller wasn't exactly misleading, that cover will fit both a 650 B-1 as well as a 650 C-1, but that's all it will fit and both of those are 77 models.

Whoa let's back up. What is it exactly that you need to order? Just a dyno cover? I have 2 just like the one you bought and both are NOS and IIRC I paid about 30 or 35 each for them. I also have one from a later model 80 or 81 that I paid about the same for. $200.00 for a cover is nuts. Unless of course you want to buy one of mine and then it's a bargain.

No i mean I can get a new alternator cover, ghasket, screws, and a points cover for $196.00 all new.

I am trying to restore the bike as much as I can.

So far this is the only purchase that has not worked out for me.

Gotta love impulsive shopping>

Kool Ryder, would need a little work and some polishing but is this workable? It's even listed for a 1978 KZ650B , check it out... ;)
