Where to get master cylinder rebuild kits? was created by storysunfolding
I'm trying to find master cylinder rebuild kits for both a 79 kz650 SR and an 81 kz650 csr. I'm admitting defeat and ready to accept humility- where do I find them?

I didn't actually see a kit there, I'm not sure what parts I would need for it. Are they all available?

I'd start by calling or emailing Z1 Enterprises. If they can't get them, check out www.partsnmore.com -- they sell a lot of rebuild kits, and might be able to track one down that'll work.

Someone with the cross-referencing software might chip in here to let you know what other bikes use the same master cylinder... I can never remember who has it. :-\

Give Z1 a shot, though. If Jeff can get one for you, that'll be your easiest option!

Story:

Even if you don't see it on Jeff's site, ask him...he can acquire virually anything that is still available and he has resources unavailable to most of us (personally I think he's hooked in with the Yakuza:) ).

If Jeff doesn't have them, I think www.partsnmore.com does.

I couldn't find them on z1 but I fired them a parts request since I couldn't get through on the line. Partsnmore doesn't have the ones for my models. I'm hoping Jeff pulls through for me.

Click the "LINK" button at the top of this page, go to Parts. Bunch a places.

Do you have the triangular shaped master cylinder? My '78 has one, and I can not find a rebuild kit anywhere for it. I believe the piston diameter is slightly different than the earlier and later models. I asked Jeff at Z1 if he had one, and he said he would have to order the parts special from Japan and make a kit. I didn't follow thru with it.

If I have to ever replace it I will go with a new aftermarket master cylinder, you can find them for about $80.

Yeah, they don't have the kits at Z1 but they can get them for $50. Makes sense to replace one. Anyone switch out their brakes with a master from another bike? Any suggestions?

This is one of the bikes that it's getting very difficult to get brake parts for. None of the aftermarket companies seem to carry one for this bike. So... the only option is genuine Kawasaki parts. According to Kawasaki Japan the piston is still available - but that's no guarantee. With Kawasaki in the USA, we can checkon the piston, but it usually takes a day of so to confirm if the part is available and in stock. Often Kawasaki shows the parts as available, but once you've ordered it they come back with an out of stock or NLA response.

If that fails, there are other options. We recently helped a customer out when we could not find a piston for the master cylinder - we used the rubber seal off a different piston that was the same diameter.

Sure but couldn't you just gank a master cylinder from another line of bikes? Yeah it won't be origional in looks or anything, but it would perform the same function.
