520 chain VS 530 chain on a KZ1000?

I've got a complete 520 conversion kit including a front sprocket (520, 15 tooth, 1/2" offset) plus a blue vortex rear sprocket (36 teeth) and a 126 link RK 520GXW silver chain. Send me a PM if anyone is interested.

No on to my reply... Problem is the 15 tooth 520 sprocket, most probably won't allow for chain clearance on most swing arm pivot tubes... As I previously mentioned, I had a 15 tooth 530 from Kosman and the damn thing was too small, the chain would beat the crap out of the pivot tube without a doubt.

Mark, which swing arm are you using with your 520 setup?

On my set up the 15 tooth was pretty close to the swingarm, but I think it would have been OK. I only rode 15 miles on it and it only started to hit after the chain stretched and loosened up. My pivot is a lot bigger than stock too. I would put a nice piece of nylon on the swingarm just in case, like the dirtbikes have.

The 15 tooth probably isn't the optimal set up, but depending on your bike it might be good for the right price.

I wouldn't mess with MRE though, doesn't sound good at all. Right, OMR??

If you know a good machinist the 530 can be turned down to a 520 pretty easily. It's the same except for the width of the teeth.

I changed my set up because the rear sprocket looked funny being so small under my custom made chainguard and my swingarm pivot is so friggin' big.

OK, I just went for a 20 mile ride with the new sprockets and chain and now the chain bangs on the top of the chainguard! I can't win. I guess there's always going to be a little clanging on the bumpy roads, I'm not changing again.

This learning process is getting expensive. I buy and try only to sell the parts at much less than I paid. This has happened with several things along the process of this build. I guess that's how you learn, right??

Ha! Not laughing at ya; definately laughing with ya! It happens to me EVERY SINGLE TIME on every project I have. Just an 'expense' in my mind. Post some pics up for those of us who are 'pic whores'.

Yea, I know. I just like it to look finished. I spend a lot of time modifying a trac chain guard to work with twin shocks and I really like how it looks. I "tweaked" it a bit and I think it will help. I'll try to post a picture:

In reviewing your chain guard mounting, are you able to raise it up with some spacers underneath?

Or have new brackets (L shaped) that can bolt onto the existing mounts (2 holes) that would be adjustable...

Just a thought, again, sorry to hear this. Same time, makes me realize what I will be facing down the road and need to think about more closely...

OK, chainguard doesn't seem to hit now that I "tweaked" it.

I got my painted parts back on today. Here's a picture. I'll get some really good ones with a better background soon. Don't you just love the green garbage tote in the background??:laugh: I also plan on starting a new post on it in the Projects sections. I really learned a lot on this rebuild.
