What about a 525 chain? Thinking of putting one on my GPz750 engined KZ650 (engine stock at mo, but could get taken out to 810)

This is an awesome thread! I just finished my MKII project and had to go with a 520 chain due to a 6" wide rear rim. Didn't want to do it, but I don't want to clearance the frame after it has been powder coated and the entire bike is together. Anyway, I got my 520 offset off eBay pretty cheap. I'll see if I can find some more info. They are definitely out there.

Badkaw - mine is now a 1260cc also - I hope the 520 holds up!!

79MKII: "520 chain due to a 6" wide rear rim"
What's the offset in this sprocket (1/2)?

Or is this OEM of some other make where the spline teeth match with a couple of spacer washers (3/8-1/2)?

In the e-bay listing, they would have most likely posted what this CC sprocket came off of, Manufacturer, Year and Model.

BigBlockT, what did you end up doing?

Thanks,

The offset I bought from eBay is a Kosman, for a KZ or GS. It is a 1/2" offset, 520 chain and I used some spacers behind it too (purchased from Z1 enterprises). The only complaint I have is I was only able to get a 14 tooth front sprocket which meant I had to go small of the rear sprocket too and I like the looks of a bigger sprocket.

I was able to contact the seller today and he thinks he can get one or 2 more in the 14 tooth (I paid $69 for mine). He also said he can have anything made for about $140. I contacted paul gast before I found that one and he will custom make them for about $200.

If you want the email of the gentleman that I bought mine from, shoot me a PM and I'll reply that way. He has a store on eBay but doesn't currently have any 520 offset sprockets listed.

Kosman... should have known...

I had some screwy dealings with them as well. I asked for an 18 tooth 530 with 1/2 inch offset, was sent a 15 tooth. Then they gave me a hard time in returning it...

Damn thing barely made it over the swing arm pivot tube. Only left about 3/16" space, no freaking way was this going to work with out beating the living crap out of my swing arm.

Which swing arm are you using?

Going smaller on the rear, isn't this going to decrease your pivot tube spacing to chain even further?

The swingarm is from Klasmo in Germany and yes, the small sprockets keep the chain real close to the pivot. I had to go small on the rear to get the drive ratio that I wanted. I can't find my receipts, but it looks like I actually have a 15 tooth front, not a 14 like I was thinking. Still, I'd prefer a 16 or 17 since it's a 520 pitch.

Here's a picture of what I ended up with. The clearance looks smaller than it actually is:

The chainguard would look a lot better with a bigger back sprocket too. I'm tempted to have a custom front sprocket made but then I need to buy a new rear sprocket and chain too. That hurts! :pinch:

Question for all...

Going from 630 to 530 the conversion is 630 tooth/5 x 6 for new 530 number of tooth dimensions to calculate out gearing.

Anyone know what the formula is for 630 to 520 conversions?
Should equate to even larger number of teeth I believe.

520, 525 and 530 all have the same 5/8" pitch, so the conversions are the same for all. It's mainly the pin width that's different. The 630 chains have a 3/4" pitch.

OMR - I just re-read your post and realized that I didn't really answer your question. I had a conversion somewhere, so I'll post it if I can find it. Or, if you have the 630 to 530 conversion, it will be the same for the 520.

Glad to hear your 520 is doing well. I was very glad to find this thread. I did it because I had to and it has really bothered me ever since. I'm beginning to feel much better about the 520 now.

I'm still waiting for my bodywork to get back from paint. I was able to put another tank on it and take it for a very short ride. Here's what it looks like with an A2 tank and no bodywork. Front fender is temporary:
