Removing melted plastic from header?
12 Jul 2008 17:33
Last year I put my cover over my kz400 without letting it cool off and the plastic liner melted on the header pipe.
Now I have an area on the header that almost looks like rust but is just hard as rock plastic.
I'm trying to get the bike ready to sell and would like to try and clean the plastic off. I've tried acetone without success and I'm nervous about using a scrubber pad 'cause I dulled a section on the muffler from using it to clean off rust.
If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate them.

Try a little oven cleaner, like Easy Off.

Not sure what would work. What about wrapping the area with dry ice for a while and then poking at it with something?

I have used a razor blade and carefully scraped it off in the past.

Thanks guys, I'll give those ideas a try. Not sure where to get dry ice here. I was going to try and remove a small dent in my tank with it but so far no luck.

Albertsons grocery stores have dry ice out here in Billings but you have to ask for it, its not in the regular ice cooler. Dont know if you have then there or not. Whether it works or not, I cant say. I remove melted shoe goo with a scraper when its hot and Wd40 & scotch brite but I have a stainless pipe on my *arley

Thanks guys, I ran the 400 around town and came home with the pipes hot. Used a razor then and it started popping off easily.
Appreciate the help. Also, We have an Albertson's down the street, I'll see if they have any dry ice tomorrow
