Regular factory lower bars will work but you may have to route the cables & hoses different to take up the extra length

You lookin' to do something like these? I have the same bike as you and the 'bars are the first thing I changed out. The guy I bought it from had these really crappy pull-backs on it that i swear were made for a midget. Anyways, no major issues to speak of when putting the bars on though you will have to get rid of (i.e. relocate or replace) the stock front turn signals. True the clutch and brake cables are a bit too long but I haven't had any issues with binding or anything. Got mine off Ebay for about 28 bucks shipped.

thanks guys, this has been really helpful! Those are the exact bars I want - I won some on ebay last night so hoepfully i can have them swapped out by the end of the week. Those mini apes were comfortable in the beginning, but if you're into aggressive riding, forget about it.

That's cool. Glad to meet a fellow Chicagoan AND KZ rider. When i'm out riding all i seem to see are punks on newer crotch rockets, old dudes on Harleys who don't want to acknoledge your presence or the occasional scooter here and there. Seems the only time I see an old KZ is when i'm driving in my car and they're parked on the street.

I took those awkward LTD bars off my KZ1000, and put on what they call 'GP touring' bars. Look a lot like what BLK750 has on his. Maybe a hair lower.
I ran with the stock cables, but found that no matter where I routed them, they'd drag. They worked but not all that well.
I ordered the shorter Z1R cables from Z1 Enterprises, and now she feels like buttah. Peachy keen.
Nice smooth seamless shifts. Love it.

doh, not sure why the hell i typed "choke". swapped em out last night..bars seem slightly short (left grip wasnt totally on all the way), but overall theyre waaay better. I had to ghetto rig the signals onto the forks, but yeah, where did you get those replacement signals? I need to find a solid way of get them attached to the bike.
