usd gsxr forks hit my tank

I have searched previouse threads and have come up empty handed. I have 05 gsxr600 forks on a 74 z1 with custom stem and I have almost no turning radius. anyone else dealt with this before. do I cut the tank and weld in a half round, beat it in?

Just went through this myself...

KZ900-A4 with ZX6R (636) front end. Damn these forks are wide (10")...

1) I had new under tank round dampers so what I did was cut one of the older ones in half (~1/2" in width).

2) With a dremel with a round sand paper disk, curve the surface that will be hitting the new round damper for a good fit.

3) Place your tank into position as normal and you should be ~ 1/2" back. Rotate your forks for clearance from your tank. With some sort of spacer ~ 1/8" in thickness (I used rubber pad) file down the lower tree swing arm stops for desired rotation just pre hitting the rubber pad you have held up on the tank. Give your self at least 1/8".

4) Once satisfied with rotation, then glue the rubber "C" spacers into the under tank "C" clips and let dry.

I use E6000 glue. holds well and is removable if required... This stuff is incredible.

This bought me about another 10-15 degrees of rotation.

NOTE: You will most likely (pending your seat) now be required to shift your seat and possibly tail section back 1/2" as well.... I know pain in the ass but we do need to be able to turn our bikes! Modifications, Ain't it fun!:blink:

Here's how a buddies worked out.

"Well, we marked the location of the indents by just turning the forks from side to side and marking with a pencil. We found a steel tube a little bigger in diameter than the upper fork tubes and cut 2 half sections out of the tube. Then we cut the tank for the steel tubes to fit in. The 1/2 sections were then trimmed to fit and welded in place. Thats where the fun began!

We found that the forks still contacted the tank at the bottom seam. We pounded on the seam to get it as flat as we could, which helped some. We decided not to try messing with the seam of the tank. You could gain a little more room if you cut that area out and welded it back together.

Then it was a little bondo and sanding... lots of sanding!

The other mistake we made was not taking into account the headlight brackets on the fork tubes! They were mounted after and contact the tank sooner than the rest of the fork. We ended up mounting new fork stops on the bottom triple clamp by drilling and taping bolts with aluminum sleeves over them. They contact the stock fork stops on the fork stem tube.

In the end, the lock to lock steering radius is quite poor! The mod looks cool, but practically it's not very functional. You need a lot of room to turn the bike around! It's about a 10 point turn to turn the bike around in my single car driveway! Riding the bike on the street there are no issues, just moving it around in tight spaces! :'(

I hate to be the complete newb here, but exactly what year/model is that? It's a beautiful inspiration of what I want my 650 to look like only I think that's a longer tail piece, isn't it? Or is it just due to the rear angle that I'm not totally familiar with yet? Lastly, any profile shots of that beautiful bike?

Any recent developments?
