Tubless or tube?

I am sure that this has been asked before, but on my kz650 my rear rim has the tubeless inner bead lock lip but the front does not. Is this standard practice for Kawasaki? I believe that the bike is all stock so I have no reason to doubt that they are not both 78 kz650 wheels but I wanted to see if there is anything else that I should look for to know. Or should I have the shop put a tire in both wheels and call it good?

Thanks,
KC

78 requires tubes front and rear, stock.

If you have a tubeless KZ wheel it will say either "TL" or "tubeless" on the rim somewhere, generally on the spokes of the mags.

I will have to check when they come back. I tried a small valve stem, but it didn't quite fit the hole in the rim. I have seen ones that don't pop in, rather they attach with a nut on the inside.

As for a bead holding lip around the inside of the rim, I was unable to break the bead and ended up cutting the tire off of the wheel (next time I'll just take it to a shop :) ). Anyways, if I can go tubeless on the rear wheel I would like to know as it may be difficult to get the bead to seat with the lip on the rim.

Does anyone else with the 78 have the same style of lip on the rear rim?

78s are all tube type front and rear. The rear on a 1978 KZ650B (spoke wheels), or KZ650C (mag wheels) in 18" size will both have the 2 bead lock things which are rubber wedges that stick through holes in the wheel the same way the valve stem does, then when tightened with the nut will lock the tire to the wheel. So if you have a 18" wheel without these locks it is not the original wheel. If you have a KZ650SR with 16" rear wheel, it's still tube type, but no wedges used.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

The bead lock that I am talking about isn't the rubber wedge like my dirtbike has, it is a lip molded into the rim on the inside of where the bead sits. It prevents the bead from slipping off when air pressure is lost. It also prevents people without c-clamps from changing their own tires :).

Ok, now I am starting to wonder about the year of my rims. They are both marked TL and the rear valve stem hole is huge (larger than a car rim valve stem hole) and the front valve stem hole is tiny.

Going to drop them off today so pictures will be up soon. Thanks for the help identifying them.
