Watch them steering stem bearings
15 May 2008 03:43
Just wanted to share a little information that I learned the hard way. I just spent the past 2 years rebuilding a 77 KZ1000. I replaced almost every part on the bike from steering stem bearings to license plate screws. I just recently got it registered and inspected. I was having a terrible time with the way it tracked down the road. It would wonder from side to side uncontrollably. I did all of the normal routine stuff like check wheel alignment with the string method. I just knew there was no way that it was the steering stem bearings right! Wrong, I had them way to tight and they were binding. I loosend them up a tad and man what a difference. Now the bike is fun to ride rather than (man I’m scared to go over 30 Mph. Without the help and knowledge (and opinions) of all you here at KZR my project would have been much harder. Thank you all.

Good post,Oz.(good point)
I remember when I did MY steering bearings...the DIFFERENCE that it made(for the better)...wow!
Never in a million years, would I have thought that changing them to tapered, would make such a night-and-day difference.

Yes I torqued to spec but I think my torque wrench is way out of cal. I used a click type and I'm skeptical of it's accuaracy.
