Sprocket size...
12 May 2008 19:35
Can someone tell me what the stock rear sprocket sizes are for a KZ1000 with an 18" rear tire and a LTD model with the 16" rear tire? I'm thinking they are 35T and 39T but I have a 35T on my bike with a 18" tire and am thinking it should be 39T. Anyone?

Both 18" and 16" used 33T on the rear.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Are you sure? I'm certain the 16" and 18" wheels took different size sprockets to compensate for the difference in wheel size. I am going to try to check and see if I can find out for sure.

There's only about 3/8" (+/-depending on manufacturer) difference in diameter between the two, believe it or not
Even though you would think there would be more since you're comparing a 16" and a 18".
Check the tire specs on the manufacturers websites to verify this for yourself.

The reason I'm asking is that I have a 35T sprocket on my bike and thought that might be off an LTD as that is what I started with when I put this bike together. Wonder what it came off of then? Hmmmm!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they didn't have different sprockets, for the simple reason I don't have a clue
I'm just saying that you probably shouldn't base your reasoning on there being a big difference in diameters between a 130/90/16 and a 120/90/18, because there isn't.
My first 750 twin arrived with a 16" rear wheel, upon discovering that a 18" was stock I decided maybe I could cut down my engine cruise rpm (and make the bike look better) if I swapped it back to a 18" wheel. When I started checking tire specs I discovered that it was pretty much a waste of time to convert it because there was so little difference in tire diameter. Then I discovered they were Morris Mags and not real common so I threw that idea out the window

If oem rear sprocket was 33 teeth, am guessing somebody along the line simply opted to replace it with a 35 tooth version. Probably are several different size rear sprockets still available for this model.
Good Luck!

Thanks guys. Just for general knowledge, a guy on another site said that the LTD, which came with 16" wheel, was stock at 33T and standard model with 18" wheels came stock with a 35T. For what it's worth. Whatever it's supposed to be, I'll just play with what I have and go. Was just curious.

Just for grins I looked it up at kawasaki.com
77-78 B1/B2 42041-1010 REAR SPROCKET,33T
77-78 A1/A2 42041-1010 REAR SPROCKET,33T
79-80 B3/B4 42041-1010 REAR SPROCKET,33T
79-80 A3/A4 42041-1032 REAR SPROCKET,35T
So it looks like the people that told you that the A and B sprockets were different were right, If they were talking about the A3/A4, but not the A1/A2.
According to kawasaki.com
And again, I don't have a dog in this hunt (always thought that expression was cool though), as I don't have any 1000's
