"Rattle Sound" every time I Rev the Engine
07 May 2008 16:12
Bike:81' KZ750 inline-4
Everytime I Rev up the engine I get a annoying rattling sound like there is something floating around inside. I believe the sound is coming from my clutch or around that area.
Have you guys had a similar problem? It a really annoying sound.
Thanks,
Anthony

I'm the Second Owner The bike had about 6,000 miles on it when I bought it, now it has about 10,000 miles.
I tune up the bike regulary, I just changed(about two weeks ago):
the spark plugs
oil
oil filter
Air Filter is new
I've rode it pretty hard when I got it other then that everythings ok.

Are you familiar with the cam-chain tensioner at all,or the clutch cover(right hand side of engine when sitting on bike).
I've heard of the clutch-hub springs getting weak and causing noise.
The cam-chain adjuster would be the easier check,to start off with.
Do you have a manual for that bike?

Is your emissions junk still installed? If not, is everything properly plugged up? There's a valve under the tank that makes a lot of noise if it's not plugged up. Looks kind of like a pcv valve. Hopefully it's something simple and not much worse.

Yes I have a well referred to manual. My co-workers and I were thinking it was something simple like a chain adjustment. I'm going to check that out this weekend and let you guys know if that fixed it.
The clutch-hub springs? Sounds like that could be something to check out.

Does it rattle when the rpm's are increasing or decreasing ?? Both ? . Camchains seem to make their rattle when the rpms are decreasing .

Possibly pre-ignition pinging? Could double-check ignition timing. Also wondering if standard NGKB8ES sparkplugs are installed (and not some hotter higher heat range plugs).
Done a plug reading? What did old plugs look like?
Good Luck!

Would also double-check drive chain condition (kinking?)-- properly lubed -- and proper slack adjustment.

So I'm referring to my manual and the "rattle appears to be the "ball lock tensioner" associated with the Cam chain and tensioner.
The manual says in order cure the problem I need the "cross wedge tensioner"
So I hope BikeBandit.com has one of these things available(I need a new head gasket too).
Thank you guys for helping me find the problem!!
