Can anyone tell me what kind of tool I need to remove the large allen head screw on the bottom of my front fork on a 1981 kz1000 CSR? The manual shows a special tool to hold every thing inside still. Is it a 3/8 or half inch drive adapter? Any help will be appreciated.

Just use a long extension drive (1/2" normally, but a 3/8" should work)on a impact wrench.
It will come loose.

I've used the air impact wrench with success on only one bike, a ZG1200, The other attempts usually ended with crush washers ground into oblivion.

There's always the wooden broomstick technique, but I recommend that you find the proper fitting to hold the damper rod still while you remove the allen key from the fork end.

The forks vary in what kind of holder tool is usable. The way I do it is loosen the top cap, but don't remove it, then get your air tool or big electric impact driver, with an allen impact socket, stick the tool on there and the bolt will loosen every time (almost). The two important things is leave the forks assembled until the allen is off as spring pressure aids in removal, and use an impact allen, others may ruin the allen screw before it's removed. All these years and I've only had 2 bikes this did not work on. Guys have used the broom handle, but I know without even trying it it won't work because wood will crumble before the allen even begins to budge. I say it won't work, but works for other guys so worth a try. I know it won't work for me before even trying it. :)

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I have only done it 3 times but I have always used a broom handle cut at about a 45 degree angle and it has always worked.

Woohoo! I got it! I found a 3/4 in. square dowel at Home Depot. That made it convenient to use an adjustable wrench to hold it with. I cut the end in to a four sided wedge shape and tapped it in. Now that I have one out and know what it looks like, I realize that I didn't need to cut the wood.
Thanks for all the help!
