Swing arm bolt is stuck! Help!
31 Mar 2008 11:39
Hey fellas, I have a '77 twin.
I've stripped it right down, but can't seem to get the swingarm bolt out.
I tried using a deadblow hammer on the nut, moderate heat (but I'm not sure where to heat exactly), a breaker bar, nothing seems to work.
The swingarm bolt will turn slightly, but only with the swingarm.
The manual that I found online says simply to remove the nut and then the bolt should slide out, but no dice.
Has anyone else run into this problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

I have always been able to recitify that problem with a BFH.
Last one I did, I had to HIT it super HARD!

Can you use a wrench and turn the bolt to get it loose first? Then Put a 2x4 over the nut and use a steel hammer. That will keep the nut and bolt safe but still have a punch. If all else fails prepare to get a new bolt.

The 77 twin has sleeves instead of bearings on the swing arm pivot, the problem is most people seldom (if ever) grease them, in spite of the fact there is a grease zerk right on top of the swing arm.
The bushings are on each end of the swing arm pivot, if a BFH don't work, you may try heating there.

If you can get your hands on a piece of brass, hold it on the bolt with your hand and hit it with a steel hammer. The metal on metal will have more effect than using wood or a deadblow hammer and the brass will lessen the chance of damaging the bolt.

Thanks fellas.
I've tried your suggestions, but I guess with too much fear of destroying the pivot shaft.
Time to bring in the BFH!
If my local parts guy doesn't have a replacement shaft & nut, any recommendations of where to find one online? (besides ebay of course.)
Any KZ parts for that matter...

You won't have to look very hard to find another pivot bolt
76-82 750 twins share the same bolt.
For 750 twin parts, just click the little "PM" button under my name
Problem is, you will need new swingarm bushings also (part number 33033-009), and they are $38.04 each (2 required) at Ron Ayers :woohoo:
I may have a good 76-77 swingarm, but I'm not sure, I'm pretty sure that I have a 78 swingarm that uses bearings instead of bushings, and it will bolt right in.
I disassembled a 77 and a 78 because I couldn't get a valid title for them (and they needed lot's of work), and I may do the same to an 80 with the same title problem
Here is the parts diagram from kawasaki.com
The bearings and spacer in the little box are for a 78-79 750 twin, you need two of the #3 bushing next to the swingarm.

First off, thanks for all the info Steell!
Today, I cursed and spat and conjured up all my memories of my ex-wife and I hammered the bastard out!
I kept yelling at it 5 minutes after it was out!
Anyhow, Are you saying that you have a 78-79 swingarm with the bearings and pivot bolt?
If so, how much do you want for these goodies?
I'm also looking for:
- a front brake piston
- the horizontal switch from the right side switch housing that turns the lights on or off.
- carb. diaphragms (possibly)
- assorted rubbers (insert joke here)
