Fork Brace mounting
10 Mar 2008 16:26
Hey everyone,
I bought a fork brace on eBay for my 82 GPz750. It is a used unit and I am not sure if it fits my bike. It seems a trifle loose. I measured and the clamping part is about .060 in. too big. I am assuming it has to be a snug fit to function properly but not too snug so that it distorts the lower fork leg. Can I machine down the flat end to bring the clearances down? Or, is this how it is supposed to fit?
TIA,

Are you sure that it's not supposed to fit over the fork dust-boots?
I know with mine, that's where it's mounted, because of the same reason. It's tight on there for sure, and you DO want it tight, otherwise it's not going to support much, with ANY slop in there.
So check to see how it fits over the fork-boots.

At first I thought that was how it was supposed to mount. Then I noticed how the top of the brace was machined to accept the dust seal. It makes more sense to mount it to the lower fork leg rather than the rubbber of the dust seal.
In any case it is too small to fit over the dust seal.
Thanks,

Mine has an aluminum shim between the brace and the lower fork legs. Kinda like a piece from a beer can but much thicker (16th " or less thick) and slotted (not a complete circle) so you can spread it (the shim) to get it around the fork leg.
The dust boots fit on top of the brace.
You can just see the shim sticking out a little from the brace, the first edge below the brace:

Thanks rstnick,
That may be the ticket. I'll see what I can find for shim material. That brace looks a lot like the one I have.

Looks like a Tarrozi Fork Brace, like what I have.
ThatGPzGuy,
Do you have any pictures of this brace you bought, and it's fitting issues? Pictures always help.

Nailed it!
I used a large hose clamp with the worm gear cut off. Instant shim!
Worked perfectly. Hope this helps someone else.

Glad it worked for you.
I didn't even know mine was shimmed until a few weeks back when I added a GPz fender and had to take it off after many years.

is there a noticable difference using the fork brace. Its one of those things that I have considered getting for a while so I'd like to hear some before and after comments. do they really make that big a difference when it comes to handling????

I had mine put on over 20 years ago, so I cannot remember the difference in feel.
At the time, being young and single, living at home and most of my income to myself, I spent more on my bike. A fork brace was one of the recomended performance improvements to help stiffen up the front end.
