1982 KZ 750 17" wheel and tire swap
09 Mar 2008 17:36
I want to swap on some 17" wheels and tires. I don't want to go too wide in the rear. (I'm thinking about a 17x4.5" wheel and a 160 tire for the rear and a 120 tire on the front). Will a 17x4.5" wheel fit my 1982 KZ750? Do I need a 3/8" offset countershaft sprocket to run the 4.5" rim? I found a 3/8" sprocket for a GPz1100. Will this part work on my KZ750?

1999-2000 (and probably other years) GSX600/750 front end with 83-85 GPz750 swingarm (modified for dual shock) with GSX750 17" wheels is an easy swap onto a KZ750E. I lengthened the stem by 1/4" and used adapter bearings from All Balls to put the front end on, haven't had time to finish the swingarm swap yet though.
17"x4.5" rear.
17"x4.5" rear.

I have some Zephyr ZR750 wheels and also a swing arm that I bought a while ago for a project . I decided to go in a more "retro" direction , so I am looking to sell these parts . The wheels are 3.0x17 Fr and 4.0x17 Rr. The swing arm is aluminum w/eccentric adjusters . I believe that I have all the hardware also . 3 Rotors , Rr axle & spacers , cush drive , Rr brake caliper bracket (maybe the cal also , can't remem) . I may even have a pair of ZR550 or ZRX piggyback shock I may be willing to part with . The wheels would go as a pair , but the other items could be separate . If interested PM me .

Can I use my factory KZ750 fork and swingarm or do I need different parts to run 17" wheels and tires?

Unless you get lucky, brakes will be the headache with stock suspension.

There is no "standard" brake rotor mounting, different number of bolts, different diameters, different bolt circle, ect. And with wider wheels the rotor is moved outboard and hits the swingarm. Generally, swapping the entire suspension is the best way to go to wider wheels.

Should I look for a ZX6R, ZX7R or ZX10 for parts?

And none of the new entire suspensions will bolt right in no matter what model or brand except maybe some Ex500 or Gs500 stuff simply due to their smaller overall size. Some early-mid 90's Gsxr stuff will fit with some "minimal" mods but that's about as lucky as you're going to get.

Some pics of ZR750 parts that I mentioned above . Your shocks will mount to this swingarm .

I'm going to start looking for a complete set of ZX6R 636 forks. I think I can fit a 160 tire in my stock swingarm.
