Seat base question was created by ThatGPzGuy
Hey Everyone,
I recently aquired a 1982 GPz750. I want to redo the seat cover but I am worried I don't have the right seat base since it does not look like a GPz seat and it seems a little wide. The part number on the bottom of the seat base is 53001-1214B. According to the online parts databases the correct part number for an 82 GPz seat is 53001-1215. I can't find the 1214B number in the database at all. It fits OK with the exception that it may be a little wide at the very front but maybe that gap exists on all GPzs? I don't know. I don't want to spring for a new seat cover that may not fit especially if I have to find a seat base for it.
Any ideas? If someone has the same model I would appreciate it if you could turn the seat over and let me know what the number is.
TIA.
Jim

Hello Jim...as silly as it might sound, a picture might help. I'll look on the bottoms of both my GPz750 seats tonight but I suspect you may have a non-US seat. The problem with the database is that it only applies to US released models...so if the seat was for a Canada-only bike (e.g. KZ750L4) then the part number for it won't appear.

OK Thanks Mcdroid.
Here is a pic:

and another:

If it is a non-US seat is just the cover different or is the foam and base different as well?
I appreciate any help you can give me.
Jim

You know Jim, Mother Kaw never fails to keep me amused...and I learn something new almost every day. While the part number may be 53001-1215...what you get when you order that is apparently 53001-1214B (which is a seat assembly, and not listed). Both my OEM seats have 53001-1214B on them and they are original equipment. Buy the new seatcover (I also bought a replacement cover and it does fit), and your seat is correct.:)

The problem with your seat may be related to the fact it has been recovered in the past. That is not the original pattern...so if the PO put on a different cover he may have slightly deformed the foam to get it to fit better. Overall, the seat appears to have the correct configuration.
