The title pretty much says it all.
I have a complete '02 front end, with triple trees and brakes, from a R1.
The bike is a '83 KZ1000 CSR.
My basic plan is to have a machine shop make a new spiNdle to fit the R1 triple tree and the KZ frame.
Is this the best way to go?
All advice welcome.

I am surprised if I am the first to try it.
I will report on the conversion.

Sounds cool. Search the forum for some threads on modern front end swaps. The principle is the same regardless of the brand of the donor front end. The modern stems are usually bigger than the KZ stems. Most people seem to agree the easiest way is to press the stems out of both lower clamps and make a spacer to press the KZ stem into the new lower clamp. A whole new stem would work too, of course, but it's a lot more machine work than making a simple spacer. Good luck on the project. Post some pics!
