Case Guards Crash Test

Two-point case guards don't help. The right side engine cover still got damaged. See photo.

Story:
Nice February morning in Vancouver. Bit chilly, sun was out, and roads were a bit damp. I took a detour to drop off a library book and on my way around to work went into a gentle curve which was damp, damp, damp, FROST, damp, damp. Also did some damage to my shoulder, turn signals, and ego.

I had survived most of the winter to hit a patch of frost in the sunshine...

Anyways, if you're thinking of two-point case guards, think again (plus they don't look that great).

Glad you're ok, it could be so much worse. Those guards were sacrificial, they did their job. From the damage done, do you think you would have lost the whole ignition setup if they weren't there?

Sorry to hear you had a spill. :(
I agree that the case guards did save your bike from more damage.
The three point ones are stronger. I've tested them, not intensionally, and am still using the same ones.

Get well soon.

Sorry about the crash and glad you are still with us. But unless I am missing something here it looks like the case savers did their job. Looks like they may be the only thing that needs replacing. Sure 3 pointers are stronger but in my estimate those 2 pointers gave up their all to do their job and succeeded. Maybe you need case saver savers? Hope you heal fast!

Glad your ok, never want to hear news like this. I understand what guards they do but I just can't get past how they look on a bike. Now, if I had a set my bike woudn't look like this....

Ouchie!
:pinch:

Looks like your case guards stopped your brake pedal from being jammed into the clutch housing, how did your foot peg come out? How about the handle bars?
Hope your shoulder heals soon.

...I might have some misc. OLD stock turn signal parts laying in box somewhere if needed.

Here's what the points cover looked like when I tore the crash guards off:

They would have helped if it was a long slide because that would have otherwise tore up the entire cover and taken all the ignition with it. The case guards take the brunt of the road friction away from the cover.

In this case, there wasn't much sliding down the road and the guards actually pressed the cover into the crankshaft bolt. Regardless, 3-point guards provide better protection.

I want to thank you for this thread. I have two sets of the three point case gaurds to fit my 750. Both sets were kindof ratty so I decided not to use 'em. But after seeing your pics I logged onto Ebay and found a pretty decent used set that WILL be installed on my bike !!! And ... I'm glad you're OK :)

Some years back, I went down on a Highway on ramp at about 80 KPH. When I was sliding along the ground, I saw my bike sliding ahead of me on the left side, and then flip over onto the right. Luckily she didn't hit the curb or the guard rail.

Here is the scrape on the three point case guard on the left:

I'm still using the case guards, despite how they look. The right one only has a scrape about 1~2 inches long.

I wish I had some sort of Gas Tank guard though, as this is the damage to my custom painted tank where the handlebar hit:

This paint is totally gas resistant. That's why I havn't fixed it myself. One day when I have the extra money, I'd like to repaint her.
