Adding a 6 inch wheel to my kz 1000

I'm in the process of adding a 17x6 inch rear wheel to my 1980 kz 1000. It's has a 18x4 inch wheel on it now, from a fzr 600.The countershaft sprocket i have on it now I believe it's 3/8. So will this work or do I need to get a 5/8 sprocket. So can someone please help me.
