How to widen frame?

21 Feb 2008 18:38

I have a 1977 KZ1000 frame and i would like to install a really nice Honda swingarm/ monoshock set up that i have. The problem is that the swingarm pivot point is 1" wider than the frame pivot point. The swingarm cannot be made shorter, it's impossible, so any ideas on widing the frame without it getting twisted? And once it's done, how do i check that it's really straight? Is this a job for a professional shop?
Thanks
B

narrowing swingarm or finding narrower arm would be much easier than widening swingarm mounting area.;)

I agree but isn't this a nice looking swingarm?

im kinda partial to this one myself,if it ever gets finished anyway!:P suzuki swingarms tend to work really good widthwise, check solomrus's swingarm swap i think he used a 600 kawasaki or something like that that looked similar to yours;)

i think mill .500 off each side, some solid bronze bushings and it is in there.i have had to do that to put late model honda swingarms in older chassis(f3-f4 maybe).or cut it off build a new pivot tube and weld it back on.i just hate to make chassis modifications, when i can modify the part itself.thats my take anyway, fwiw.

Due to the way that the arm is cast I'm not sure he can just cut off what he can't use. I'd be leary of welding on to a cast part like that. Now if it was extruded or machined like that I wouldn't think twice. But welding to a cast part that's in such a high stress area would scare the crap outta me.

I think if he really wants to use the arm he can either widen the frame OR grab a Kz100ST frame which is a couple inches wider.

what shocks me are the shock mounts. For all the ruggednesses of a built swingarm thay are such little guys...I have often thought if they can handle the load than the swingarm will be more than able.

Just my thought... prove me wrong and show me a swingarm swap that also reinforced the shock mounts!! (i would honestly be happy because i have a zrx1100 rear end, that I plan on adding to my 650...I want to know how to do it right!)
