I needed to completely service the set of forks that are going on my KZ so I got the manuals out (never done this before on any motorcycle) and found that the Haynes manual had a fairly good idea for the tool needed to hold the dampner rod while the bolt is taken out the bottom of the fork.

Well it said to use a 19mm bolt pined into the end of a piece of pipe. .... 19mm is really close to 3/4" so I just welded a 1/2"-13 nut (3/4" hex) onto a bit of 1/2"-13 allthread and welded another at the other end. I made the overall length overly long (40") but maybe the extra length will come in handy someday !!! 36" long would be just about right.

Tool worked GREAT !!! I'll post up a picture tommorrow.

That works for some, but not all of the forks. I've worked on two SR 650s and the 19mm bolt head held the damper rod. On the 650B that I have, there is no socket type of head on the damper rod, just a smooth bore. So, I took some scrap 3/4" rod and fashioned a tapered four sided wedge that holds it while the other end was threaded and I welded a nut to it so I can hold it with a 1 1/8" wrench.

Farm scrap is valuable!

Hmmm ... that's interesting. I wonder how many different types of tools one would need to be able to service any and all KZ's ??? I wonder what all models my tool will work on ? Will it work for other makes / models as well ? My factory front forks are KYB air forks so maybe this tool will work for other KYB forks no matter the make of the bike .... lol ... All I know is it accomplished my task at hand :)

Farm scrap IS valuable !!!! So is machine shop scrap !!!! ;)
