650 steering stem
06 Feb 2008 13:01
Hi,
I've just spent the last hour or so grinding away at the bottom yoke (tree) from my Kz650 in order to be able to get the stem pressed out, I'm planning on fitting a Suzuki Bandit 600 front end to my kz, so I want to fit the 650 stem to the bandit tree, now the diameter of the part that fits to the bandit tree (for the bandit) is 30mm, it looks to me like its less than that for the kz650, can anyone confirm the diameter of the bottom of the stem of a 650? It looks like it could be back to the drawing board for me!
Thanks
Geoff

Ya i thinks its 28mm could be wrong, but what you have to do is get a sleeve machined to fit over the kz stem (then welded to it) with an outer diameter the same as the bandits.

Oh dear!
Perhaps I'll press the bandit stem back in the bandit yoke, and just space it out...
Shame, I thought this was going to be easy - silly of me!

Yep, its 28mm. doh!
I may try getting it built up with weld and ground back, anyone done this before?

you can weld it up.but the same guy that is going to turn it back to the proper size, could build you a sleeve and you would not have a stem that has possibly been hardened by the amount of welding it takes to build it up.

I'm just worried about the wall thickness of such a sleeve, it'll only be 1mm, will this be a problem?

It should be able to be done considering many people have done such things. look at oldmanrock's post on his zx-6 conversion.

All done now, guy at work machined up a sleeve and then welded it all together, brilliant job. He also bored out the top yoke stem diameter to match the assembly method of the KZ650.
Amazing what you can get done if you know the right people!

woohoo !way to persevere.don't worry about the sleeve being thin walled,it is captured by the tree and the stem.it is not going anywhere.
