There is another solution.
Just tack weld the shifter to the shaft.
You can easily grind off the tack weld to remove.
It sure beats splitting the cases.

take a die-grinder with a cutoff wheel and pass it through the gap on the shifter where it tightens up.that will give you more room to be able to tighten it up all you need,by removeing enough material to clamp tighter.i have done this on many bikes and quads.

I'd do the tack weld and make sure to carry a set of vice grips for a temp shifter if it ever fails on a ride. Just make sure you don't have to get to the sprocket or your clutch cable in the NEAR future, but even so you should be able to grind off the tack easily.

Why would he have to split the cases? The shift rod is on the outside of the cases.

Yeah, like Steell says, no need to split the cases - just remove the mission cover and you can replace the shift shaft/gear selector from the outside:

i tried to file some of the gap to make it tighten more, didnt work i dont think i did it enough. im gonna try it some more if that doesnt work i might try and drill through the shifter into the shaft, if not im breaking out the welder.
thanks for all the responses.
