There is not much info on this anywhere, has anyone ever made this modification or heard of it?

Perhaps better for drag racing (where toggle-switch on-off throttle may be desired).
But more difficult to maintain precise throttle position in most other riding applications such as road riding or dirt-bike riding or you name it.
Guessing not universally the cat's meow or would be more commonly used.
But good luck, and let us know how you like it anyhow.

I like them. Use them on my streetbikes and like them. I've found that there is so much 'throw' in the older KZs (and other bikes of similar era) that the 1/4 turn makes the throttle response much more aligned with later-model bikes. To make it happen you purchase the throttle kit from a dealer, or eBay, or whatever. Different strokes for different folks. If you try it and you don't like it just put your old throttle back on and *poof* there you are; put it up on eBay (or here) and send it down the road.
I think Patton makes a good point in that maybe you won't like it. Give it a try and see what you think. It's a really inexpensive mod and it's totally reversable...not too many mods are like that.

It's one of those mods that you have to use for a while to get used to it. Once you have used it and get a feel for it, it's usually fine. Quick throttle response with very little movement. Has it's good points. Like going from highway bars to superbike bars. The latter feels too ow and might feel uncomfortable for awhile but once you use them for awhile, they are one of the best bars out there. Try the throttle, give it a few miles and then see if you like it. Like said before, you can always switch back. Only problem is that if you don't get one with push/pull, you could have an issue with the slides closing all the way because of the vacuum pull at high throttle openings.

Heads Up, krcrawford29 --
Bad Kaw is not allowed to give KZ650 advice. But ... Oh, Wait! ... Neither am I.
Just kidding, as Bad Kaw and racer54 are correct -- Won't really know what's best for you until you try it.

Thanks for the heads up
I know I will like it, all my other toys have always had 1/4 turn. Truthfully, the half turn takes a super conscious effort to get to full throttle, very annoying, but probably better on gas:evil:
So the kits just replace the upper part? nothin at the carb level?

I like them. I installed one on my ELR last summer to control the Keihin CR's and it works great and doesnt seem to be too touchy either. Like said earlier though its a personal preferance thing.

You can either replace the whole throttle assembly with a 1/4 turn throttle kit or I have seen, in the past, where there were kits to use in the stock handlebar assembly but I haven't seen any lately and not sure if they are still available. Be easier to replace handlebar unit but you would have to figure out what to do for the other conviences on the switchpad, like the kill switch, etc.
