Z1 Front brakes was created by Dice
After being a lurker for a few months I finally have a question for the masses. I am armpit deep into resurecting a 75 z1 which has not seen the pavement for almost 20 years.

I am at a crossroads on what to do about the front braking system. Do I rebuild the stock system or look aftermarket? The only salvageable part on the bike now is the master cylinder.

I am considering looking to the aftermarket, but am having a difficult time finding anything that fits the z1. Does anyone make rotor and calipers that fit this bike?

id say youre gonna have a hard time finding parts other than z1 or some of the early triple stuff that will fit the 6 bolt z1 hub.check into a 76-78 900/1000 or 650 they used a 4 bolt hub that is really easy to find rotors for;)

Still recovering, some days are better than others.

Plummen is right, anything aftermarket for a Z1 might be very expensive...become one with the eBay gods...it is usually overflowing with Z1 parts

I just went through the same thing with a 73 Z1. I used a 77 kz650 master cylinder and paid through the nose for a z1 caliper on e-bay. While I was waiting for the z1 parts i put kz1000 fork tubes on so i could ride. The kz fork tubes will accept a broad range of calipers due to bolt spacing being wider.

Yeah I am really not wanting to switch over to a kz front end after I have just rebuilt the front end on the z1 a few weeks ago! :(

I see that z power in the UK has what I am looking for, but its a little pricy. I didn't know if maybe Grimeca had something, or if someone has fabricated a custom mount for a more modern caliper/disc on a z1 front end.

Maybe I will just keep watching ebay for another caliper and hope I can get one before it warms up enough to actually ride it.

What I did with my '73 Z1's front end: replaced the fork lowers with those from a KZ650 (you could use those from '77-'78 KZ1000 as well), used damper rods from a '76 KZ900 (for better damping than the Z1s), Progressive springs, Telefix fork brace, '79-'80 KZ1000 calipers (which are much better than the Z1 dual disc setup), DP brake pads, and '79-'80 KZ1000 front disc rotors (4.5 mm thick).
